Baby tips for a new dad are most useful when they help you take part in an ordinary day. You do not need to be confident about everything before you begin learning. Start with one task, get the guidance you need and build from there.
This page keeps the original Sanford Health video and adds five practical ideas for sharing care. You will get a way to choose tasks, prepare supplies, communicate clearly, spend time together and ask for help.

Watch the original video on YouTube. Sanford also hosts an official video page. The written ideas below are separate iBabyMama editorial context, not a transcript.
1. Pick a care task to learn properly
Choose a routine you will use often and ask someone qualified to show you anything that is unfamiliar. Keep the relevant instructions nearby. If you are unsure about holding, bathing or using equipment, say exactly which part you need help with.
Turn a general intention into a specific next step: learn where the changing supplies are, read the cleaning instructions or prepare the bag for an appointment. A small task you understand is a useful start.
2. Prepare the changing routine before it begins
Check that the ordinary supplies are easy to find. Agree where clean clothing goes and how used items are handled. Restock before the last item is gone rather than leaving a note that another person must notice in the middle of a change.
Write down what needs replacing and separate that from questions about care. Buying another product does not answer a question about a rash or a diaper pattern. Bring those concerns to your baby’s care team.
A changing-area option: Ubbi diaper pail
This observed steel pail uses regular trash bags. Check the current instructions, lid and child-lock features. Keep it out of your child’s reach and follow cleaning guidance. A pail is an optional way to organize disposal, not a substitute for changing diapers or addressing a skin concern.

Discuss which tasks each person is taking on and what support is wanted. Sanford’s companion article encourages communicating with your partner and helping with routine care and household tasks. Ask rather than assuming what will be most useful.
A handoff can be one sentence about the last task and one about the next. Include an unresolved question if someone needs to follow up. Try to finish the whole agreed task, including putting supplies away or restocking, so the next person can begin comfortably.
For related learning, our baby care basics class guide offers a preparation and practice checklist.
4. Make room for time with your baby
Routine care gives you a chance to become familiar with your baby. Talk during an ordinary change or sit together when you are alert and able to supervise. You do not need an elaborate activity plan to spend attentive time together.
If you choose to use a carrier, read the exact manual before the first attempt and ask for fitting help when needed. Do not treat a carrier as an approved sleep surface. Learning its limits matters more than trying to copy a position seen online.
5. Ask for support before uncertainty grows
Keep the care team’s contact information available and know how to get after-hours advice. Save questions in plain language. “I am unsure about this step” is enough to start a useful conversation.
Sanford’s New Dad’s Playbook class is intended for a first-time support person. Check current location, format and availability before registering. A local class or care-team demonstration may also be useful.
Sharing concerns about your own adjustment is part of asking for support. You can learn while also recognizing when you need rest or help with a task.
Questions about baby tips for a new dad
What if I have never cared for a baby?
Start with guidance and a manageable task. Ask for a demonstration, keep instructions accessible and speak up when something is unclear. A video can introduce a topic but does not establish competency in safety skills.
How do I know which supplies to buy?
Check the suitable items you already own and the routine you are trying to organize. Compare instructions, fit and limits before purchasing. A product list should support your care plan, not determine it.
Put one of these baby tips for a new dad into practice
Choose a task, confirm the instructions and agree when you will handle it. Keep one question for your next conversation. Our newborn baby basics guide provides a related first-day checklist.
A carrier option to compare: Ergobaby Omni Classic
The observed listing has a 7 lb and 20 inch minimum and a 45 lb maximum. Follow the exact manual for each position and developmental stage. Keep your baby’s face visible and airway clear, and seek fitting help if unsure. It is not a vehicle restraint or an approved separate infant sleep surface. This option is not suitable for every newborn.

I'm sure hope, i am going to be future parent.
Just finished reading ‘Raising Warriors: Preparing Your Children For a Godly Life’ and it really opened my eyes to some new ways of guiding my kids in their faith. Highly recommend it if you’re looking to strenghten your family’s spiritual life

My kid's just a little blastocyst right now, but getting a head start!
Bro I’m about to be a dad in 2 months.. can’t wait to see my sons face🥹
I'm about to be a new dad and I'm cringing that this video refers to a baby hold as a football hold. Like football came before babies 🤣
A lot of this information is garbage. Far more is needed than just ‘put baby down for a nap’. As a dad of a 4 month old, a lot of detail has been missed out and made out to be very simple. Look elsewhere for information would be my advice.
Son was born 2 hours ago, thought i had most of this down but i guess i got a lot more to learn thank you !! Goodluck dads our kids need us
I'm 24 and my girlfriend is 24 we are about to have a baby in June 14, 2024 this is our first baby so I'm checking out this video I'm hoping this will help me
Diapers: my son was born at 38 weeks, then spent 3 days with minimal eating (no diapers). I never expected changing a diaper would make me happy.
Very helpful video, thank you!
My son was born on my wife’s birthday (July 24). Thank you for this wonderful and informative video!
