Buying baby products can become a long list of purchases before you have decided what each item will do. A useful shortlist starts with your family’s needs, space and daily care, rather than a promise that every popular product is essential.
Here you will find the original Tina Yong video and four separate buying checks: need, fit, upkeep and product history. Two optional everyday items show how to compare a listing without treating it as a required purchase. The final check matters before accepting a used item as well as before ordering something new.
Watch the original buying baby products video
The Tina Yong recording is titled Don’t make these 4 MISTAKES when buying baby products. The checks below are our separate shopping companion, not a transcript or a claim to reproduce the video’s four points. Use the original recording for the creator’s own recommendations.
1. Name the need before adding the item
Write down when you would use the product and what you already own that could serve the purpose. Separate immediate care needs from optional conveniences and items for a later stage. A registry can include future items without requiring you to open and use them now.
Choose a place to store the item, and consider who will use it. If you cannot yet identify a useful role, leave it on a comparison list. Buying fewer options at once can give you time to learn your preferences.
2. Read fit and stage requirements
Check the exact model, size and manual rather than assuming a product category is suitable for every baby. Height, weight, developmental stage and compatibility can each limit use. A claim that something grows with your baby does not remove those limits.
For furniture or gear, record the model name so you can find its instructions again. For consumables or clothing, compare the pack quantity and size. Do not treat a marketplace age range as a substitute for the manufacturer’s requirements.
A simple cleanup item to compare

Yoofoss Muslin Burp Cloths, White, 10 Pack, 20 by 10 inches: The observed listing describes ten cotton muslin cloths, each 20 by 10 inches. Check whether that quantity fits your laundry routine before ordering. Wash and inspect them according to the care label. They are for supervised everyday cleanup, not loose bedding or a treatment for reflux.
3. Include upkeep in the comparison
Look for the cleaning steps, removable parts and replacement needs before deciding an item is convenient. Ask whether your household can follow those steps with the equipment and time available. A small purchase can still require regular care.
For feeding equipment, CDC guidance advises cleaning bottles after each feed, separating their parts and letting cleaned items air-dry thoroughly before storage. Follow the manufacturer for compatible cleaning and sanitizing methods. Comparing bottle systems includes their parts and cleanup, not just appearance.
4. Check recall information and condition
CPSC advises checking recalls before buying used products. Match the actual model and identifying details, and check the manufacturer’s instructions. A reassuring photo or familiar brand is not enough to establish an item’s history.
Do not accept missing parts or improvise a repair. Ask about condition, included instructions and the return policy before committing. For a used item with uncertain history, choose a suitable alternative rather than assuming a low price settles the question.
For further planning, see our baby accessories guide and paced bottle-feeding guide.
Buying baby products questions
Do I need everything on a registry list?
No. Use a list to compare needs and optional conveniences, then choose what fits your family.
Does a longer advertised lifespan make a product better?
It may be useful, but suitability, condition, instructions and upkeep still matter. Do not extend use beyond the stated limits.
Are these the video’s exact four mistakes?
No. These are separate editorial buying checks. The original video above preserves Tina Yong’s presentation.
An optional bottle system for your shortlist

Dr. Brown’s Options+ Narrow Baby Bottles, 4 oz, 4 Pack: This verified listing is a four-pack of 4-ounce narrow bottles with vent-system parts. Check the current contents, nipple flow and cleaning instructions. A vented design is not a guarantee that a baby will accept the bottle or a cure for gas or colic. Compare with your feeding plan before buying multiple sets.
Start with the next item you actually need. Record its exact identity, check its requirements and decide whether its care routine works for you.

That cot is 700 FFS ain't buying that
what if i need the bed for the next baby? i have to buy a toddler bed then anyway
Some of these things are for TINY ASIAN BABIES! My son was 9 lbs. 8 ounces at birth! 😂😂😂 he’s not going to fit 5 years in the bassenett bed 🛌 hilarious
This is a stoke ad. For sure everything was gifted
fifth mistake: buying everything from the same brand
That stokke chair is over 200 euros excluded the newborn insert, the cushions, the gliders and the baby lounge set. Just saying
See im ocd about redundant things. I dont like anything I cant see used for long term. So when we talked about baby beds, I immediately knew I wanted something that would go through several stages of life. The one I have worked until my son was 4.5 and by then we were discussing my daughter who now has his bed. I didnt get some overly childish bed for my son either. I got something that a teen and preteen can enjoy later. I didnt really want a bassinet but mine was given to me by a coworker so gifts dont usually fall into my redundancy issue.
I’m guessing this is an ad

I bought a bunch of different stuff and what I didn't use I donated/gifted. I don't regret it because then I could see what I really used or liked.
With my second I wondered why I didn't buy certain things with my first , made life so much easier
stokke highchair is a pass, it's heavy, narrow space to sit in, my kid refused to use it since he‘s 8-month,what a waste
Too fancy.
All stokke products are so UGLY and overpriced. Nice try.
Loved the way you explained this. Subscribed❤
I went broke watching this video
Let me guess.. sponsored by Stokke?? 😂
The stokke bathtub is a pass. My little one appeared uncomfortable in it until he could sit up as the seat isn’t very adjustable. We used the seat in the sink when he was a newborn but he quickly grew out of it.
Seem pretty biased to stokke or is it just me 😂😂😂 she'd be the person that'd buy her kid a stokke toothbrush if they made one because the marketing told her it's the best toothbrush ever made 😂😂😂
You even don't need this things
Got a bassinet that lasts for 6 months that attaches to the side of your bed, completely worth it
We have that travel bathing! We would fill it with all of our baby supplies when traveling and use the bath in hotels. It’s been awesome!

Our baby is cute ❤
i feel like only the chair that will worth it, other products will just go to waste someday lol
A 4 in 1 crib could outlast those 2 years…. this is an expensive ad
Shouldn't this be tagged as an ad for stokke…
I love that the Stokke chair is now available around the world. I'm from germany and nearly every family uses them here. My brother has his (nearly 30 years old) now for his son. We have 2 and used them for our kids from age 0-5. Now, they're in the garage, waiting for children that visit us 😁
Def not sponsored by Stokke
LOVE the crib (love that it rolls and grows with your baby) and the bath too, Stokke is one of my favorite brands out there. Still using the same items after 3 kids.
PUT IT ALL IN YOUR REGISTRY and pray for the best. My dad and aunts and husband’s family ended up buying us these for their first grandchild… the excitement and splurge doesn’t come around again ❤
I got the UppaBaby vista stroller and no regrets because I have 3 under 4 yo BUT I wish I could plurge in the Yoyo as a second stroller for the days I’m only travelling with one kid and don’t need storage – it’s so lightweight and compact!!
My mom is having a baby so, I'll tell her to get these things. Is there a online website? ❤
Please share product links
The moral of the story is, buy the most expensive baby products only.
Lol so this was just a Stokke ad
I want the stokke high chair😊
