A colicky baby can leave you searching for one more thing to try. Begin with whether your baby needs medical attention, then consider simple comfort measures and support for you. There is no reliable promise that a technique or product will stop crying within minutes.
Do not assume a new or unusual cry is colic. Seek urgent medical help if something seems seriously wrong. The NHS colic guidance advises emergency assessment for a weak, high-pitched or abnormal cry. The AAP fever guidance says to call the pediatrician immediately if a baby three months or younger has a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, even without other symptoms. Use your local emergency services when emergency help is needed.
Below are six written checks for symptoms, feeding, everyday comfort, gentle soothing, sleep and caregiver support. The original video is retained separately. The last check gives you a practical way to arrange help when the crying is wearing you down.
This guide adds editorial context rather than a transcript or reconstruction of the video’s six techniques. The product examples are optional care supplies, not treatments or proof that a baby has colic.
Watch the original colicky baby soothing video
Original soothing video on YouTube. The source remains available for its demonstration. A video title or a technique that helps one baby does not guarantee a result for another.
1. Check whether the crying needs assessment
Tell the care team what is different from your baby’s usual pattern. Include when it began, how feeding is going and any other changes you have noticed. Do not use a shopping list or this page as a diagnostic test.
The NHS describes colic as substantial crying without an obvious cause in an otherwise healthy baby. It advises seeking help when you are worried, struggling to cope, the baby is not gaining weight as expected or symptoms continue after four months. Colic is a possible explanation, not a reason to dismiss your concern.
Keep the care team’s advice somewhere another caregiver can find it. If you have already been given a plan for your child’s health needs, follow that plan rather than trying to apply a general video to every situation.
2. Review feeding questions with the care team
Note any relationship you observe between feeds and crying. A short record can make your questions clearer without claiming that the timing establishes the cause. Include what you actually saw rather than assuming every uncomfortable episode is trapped gas.
The AAP’s fussy-baby guidance suggests recording feeding, sleeping and crying patterns and discussing them with the child’s doctor. It also advises contacting the doctor about fussiness after feeds with excessive spit-up or vomiting and poor weight gain.
Ask about feeding concerns before making repeated changes to formula, a breastfeeding parent’s diet or supplements. A bottle advertised as anti-colic is not proof that it will resolve persistent crying. Our paced bottle-feeding resource and burping video resource offer related context.
3. Look at ordinary comfort and care needs
Check the diaper and whether your baby may be hungry, too warm or too cold. These are ordinary care checks, not a complete explanation for a colicky baby’s crying. A familiar routine can help you keep track of what has been checked and what still needs attention.
If a temperature check is needed, ask the care team which method is appropriate and use the device as directed. A thermometer supplies a reading; it does not diagnose colic. Do not postpone medical help for an unwell baby while shopping for equipment or repeatedly trying to obtain a different reading.
Optional care-supply comparison: Frida Digital Rectal Thermometer for Babies, Newborns & Infants
This rectal-only device is a comparison example for a temperature method your care team has advised. It is not a soothing treatment and should not turn an urgent call into a product decision. Observed rectal-only digital thermometer with protective stopper and storage case. Follow the exact manual for placement, cleaning and the final-reading signal; do not promise a definitive result at the first quick reading. Ask the care team which temperature method is appropriate. Do not delay seeking help for an unwell baby while trying repeated measurements.

4. Try gentle comfort without expecting a deadline
The NHS lists cuddling, gentle rocking and a warm bath among measures families may try. It does not recommend anti-colic drops, herbal or probiotic supplements for colic, and cautions against spinal manipulation or cranial osteopathy. Discuss concerns with the care team rather than escalating through a list of remedies.
Choose a manageable comfort option and stay attentive to your baby. You do not need to keep trying a new technique every few minutes because a title promises rapid relief. Crying that continues is not evidence that you are doing a poor job.
Keep purchases separate from expectations. The care supplies shown here may serve an ordinary task, but neither is presented as making crying stop. A colicky baby does not need a growing collection of products before you can ask for support.
5. Keep soothing separate from the sleep setup
The AAP safe-sleep guidance recommends placing infants on their backs on a firm, flat appropriate sleep surface with a fitted sheet. Keep loose cloths, blankets, pillows and stuffed toys out. If a baby falls asleep in a carrier, stroller or similar sitting device, move them to an appropriate sleep surface as soon as possible.
A position used while an awake baby is being held does not establish a suitable sleeping position. Share the sleep plan with anyone helping you. Soothing choices should not lead to adding an incline, soft object or loose burp cloth to the sleep area.
For additional planning questions, see our newborn sleep guide. The basics remain relevant even on a difficult evening.
6. Arrange support for the caregiver
The AAP advises putting a baby in a safe place, such as an appropriate crib without blankets or stuffed animals, and taking a short break when frustration is building. Call someone for support. Never shake, hit or roughly handle a baby.
Agree on a handoff with another responsible caregiver when one is available. Explain the baby’s recent feeds, changes, concerns and care instructions. Make the request concrete: a period of care, a meal, help with laundry or company while you call the clinician.
A colicky baby’s care is not something you must manage alone to prove your patience. If you are finding it hard to cope, tell the care team or a trusted person. A break plan and professional advice matter more than finding the perfect product.
Optional care-supply comparison: Yoofoss Muslin Burp Cloths, White, 10 Pack, 20 by 10 inches
These cloths are an optional comparison for supervised burping and ordinary cleanup. They do not treat colic. Keep them out of the sleep space after the cleanup task is finished. Observed White ten-pack, 20 by 10 inches, listed as 100% cotton muslin. Listing calls it organic; certification not independently verified, so do not make certified-organic claims. Follow washing instructions and inspect for wear. For supervised cleanup and burping only; keep loose cloths out of infant sleep spaces. No claim of preventing choking, reflux or spit-up.

Frequently asked questions
Can I calm a colicky baby in minutes?
A technique may help, but there is no guaranteed time limit. Check for concerns that need assessment and seek support when needed rather than treating continued crying as a failed challenge.
Does this article reproduce the video’s six tips?
No. The video is preserved as its own source. The six written checks are separately researched editorial context, not a transcript or a claim about everything demonstrated.
Do the featured products treat colic?
No. The thermometer is a temperature-check tool and the cloths are for supervised cleanup. Neither establishes a diagnosis or promises relief.
What to do next
Start with the urgent guidance above, bring your observations to the care team and choose a manageable comfort routine. Write down who can help on the next difficult evening. Your next step can be a call or a handoff, without buying another item.

I really dont even know what to do anymore but to try anything that suits the baby.
Is it ok to make my 1 month cry it out if he not sick, clean, fed and carried him for awhile but still fussy and don't want to sleep. Could I make him cry it out and for how long?
Great informative video on colic conditions. Thank you! I wished I had this video to help new parents understand this condition. It was exhausting at the time with my newborn!

Me right now 😢
😢
My baby is 3 weeks old. She was amazing for 2 weeks. Now spends Most of the day crying unless when sleeping or nursing. It’s like she’s rarely awake and content. She hates the 3 different carriers I have. Hates the swing, the floor, the bouncing chair, the pacifier… I thought she was probably not eating enough, then started pumping and giving a bottle just to make sure she’s eating all she needs and more. I have to be doing something wrong…
I am a mum again after 18 years.
I have a new baby🎉🎉❤❤
Viele Babies haben ein gestörtes Mikrobiom oder vertragen die Milch nicht. Das kann Mann sehr gut untersuchen.

I'm pretty sure in the UK you cant have your baby facing forward under 2 (I think) so they wont see much from the car lol great tips though thank you.
I’m two days into farherhood. He was fine and now I can’t get him to stop
My baby cries like if it’s in pain took her to the doctor and they said she looks really healthy and even gained almost 3 pounds and she eats really good but still cries at around 11:30pm all night and she farts a lot
My baby is two weeks old. Two things help. Milk in her mouth and I just found out a carrier helps too. One sure thing is when she sleeps on her belly. Not safe. But I found a way to get her head steady to the side and she's under constant monitoring..
I'm a new father, thank you so much for the informative video I will definitely try these techniques out. You are a lifesaver
What's the difference between colic and infant dyschezia
Hi Emma. My baby boy would cry non-stop for hours starting a week after birth. Being a first time mom, i felt hopeless and depressed even though i had strong family support.
All doctors i had been to dismissed my concerns and did not give even an ounce of advice.
I did my own research and understood that my baby was becoming overtired as im not putting him to sleep soon enough. For me, the swaddling technique was the game changer. My LO hates when i swaddle him and he cries a lot and fights it. But after a good feeding he sleeps longer and wakes up happier. I also watch out for the cues of sleep. Even though i miss them sometimes, he has become a lot easier to soothe than the past.
My son is 4 months now and still needs help sleeping, but i can see light at the end of the tunnel.
My first child was colicky. He was ether eating and crying, sleeping briefly, or crying. I wish you had been around then. I thought it was normal to cry all the time. He is actually autistic and constantly verstimulated.
My baby is crying 3-5h a day, can be awake for up to 12h in one go, 7 days a week hahaha, will go crazy soon 😀
I’m a new father of a very beautiful baby girl🎉❤❤.
Gas pain is also a cause for the colicky crying, and can be relieved by moving the baby's legs in certain ways. Checkout videos that teach how to get rid of babies' gas.
There are endless videos on YouTube that address the what-to- do's for your infant who has colic, but have yet to find one that actually dives in to the probable causes.
My grandson who is 2 weeks old is suffering from moderately severe colic symptoms.
Both of my adult sons showed the same type symptoms within their first week of life. Being a new mom I looked to my mother and grandmother for advice, and without hesitation, they both recommended switching their formula to soy. Low and behold, that did the trick.
I'm a little confused as to why physicians in this day and time don't seem to acknowledge the possibility that the diet could be the issue. Maybe because older remedies have been rejected by the medical community? Or maybe because they aren't teaching this to medical students. Either way, these babies should not have to suffer for the sake of medical biases.
Our baby cries because of being sleepy….
We've tried all of these things. My baby doesnt like carriers and screams being held.
Hello mam can you suggest any sleeping drops for my newborn, she just sleep 6-8 hours per day I need solution for my problem please suggest
I have added your channel to my personal training as a prenatal/early childhood home visitor. The information you provide is indispensable, especially since it has been over a decade since I had my last baby. My agency provides amazing, intense training, but your videos can easily be shared with the parents I visit as an easy-to-follow resource. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge as a professional, and a Mom!
