Choosing first foods for baby involves more than picking a favorite from a ranked list. The same food can need different preparation depending on your baby’s stage, and the feeding plan should fit their needs.
Here you will find the original Doctors Bjorkman video plus three separate checks: readiness, useful nutrients and foods to avoid or limit. Two optional supplies support ordinary meals and cleanup. Read the safety check before selecting ingredients, and take individual questions to your baby’s clinician.
Watch the original first foods for baby video
The Doctors Bjorkman recording is titled Pediatrician Explains 10 Best First Foods & 13 Worst Foods for Baby. The original description names Kurt and Sarah Bjorkman. This page preserves that source; the checks below are separate editorial context, not a transcript or a reconstruction of its ten and thirteen items.
1. Check readiness and preparation together
CDC guidance recommends beginning complementary foods at about six months when developmentally ready. Head and neck control, supported sitting and swallowing rather than pushing food out are relevant signs. Food texture must suit your child’s abilities.
Before a meal, decide how the food will be prepared and how you will supervise. Have your baby seated upright, and stay attentive during eating. If you are uncertain about a preparation, ask for guidance instead of assuming a familiar adult food needs no change.
Take a specific question to the next care conversation: which texture fits now, whether an ingredient needs special advice, or how to follow an existing feeding plan. A video ranking cannot answer those individual details on its own.
2. Include nutrients without making meals a test
The AAP’s breastfeeding and solids guide describes iron-rich foods as useful early choices, including appropriately prepared meats and iron-fortified infant cereal. It also explains that solids complement continued breastfeeding rather than immediately replacing it.
For your own feeding plan, ask about suitable choices and any allergy concerns. Avoid adding a supplement simply because a page mentions a nutrient. If one is prescribed, use the specific instructions from your clinician.
Keep a manageable meal routine. You can make a short note of what was offered and any question that arose, without requiring your baby to finish an adult’s preferred amount. If feeding causes ongoing concern, share that information with the care team.
An optional spoon for suitable complementary foods

OXO Tot Silicone Spoons, 2 Pack, Blossom and Opal: This verified option is a two-pack of flexible silicone spoons. Check the current pack contents and cleaning instructions. Use with suitable foods when your child is ready, under supervision. A spoon is not proof of readiness, a choking-prevention device or a nutritional treatment.
3. Review foods to avoid or limit
CDC guidance advises no honey before twelve months, no cow’s milk as a drink before twelve months, and no unpasteurized foods or drinks. It also advises avoiding added sugars and foods high in salt for young children.
Age limits and preparation risks are different checks. An ingredient that can fit a baby’s diet may still be unsafe in a hard, round or otherwise unsuitable form. Use the CDC choking-hazards guide to review texture and shape, and stay beside your child while they eat.
Check the actual labels and recipe before cooking. If a new recipe uses an ingredient you cannot identify or has unclear quantities, choose a preparation you can verify. For a fuller introduction, see our starting solids guide.
First foods for baby questions
Are these the video’s exact ranked foods?
No. Watch the original recording for its numbered presentation. This page adds separate checks and current primary-source links.
Can I choose one food and use it at every meal?
Discuss a suitable variety and feeding plan with your baby’s clinician if you need help. This page does not prescribe a single-food diet.
Do I need special utensils to start?
You need suitable feeding equipment and supervision, but the optional products here are not required purchases. Use appropriate items you already own when they fit.
An optional cleanup cloth

Yoofoss Muslin Burp Cloths, White, 10 Pack, 20 by 10 inches: The verified listing describes ten cotton muslin cloths, each 20 by 10 inches. Follow the care label and use a clean cloth for supervised everyday cleanup. Keep loose cloths out of sleep spaces. These are not disinfectants or treatment for feeding difficulties.
Choose one suitable next meal, prepare it for your baby’s abilities and keep the conversation open with the professionals who know their care needs.

Excellent & Thanks!
I wish you gave more specifics. When you say an allergy, what do we look for? How many days do we wait for something else? Is that the only food they eat for three days?
I started solids with my baby at 6 months. We did pretty well with variety for a while, but it's taking so long to introduce allergens because I was taught to space them out 2-3 days apart from each other and once introduced, keep offering 1-2x per week. It's going to take months to introduce allergens and there isn't any days left to introduce any other foods like veggies or fruit or meat. How am I supposed to give my baby a variety of foods but also space them out?
Can someone explain the method they mentioned for 3rding a banana?
Oh shit my baby was gnawing on chicken legs at 2 months😭 now 6 months and eats everything we adults eat (she can’t stand puréed foods but loves applesauce)
very healthy
@TheDoctorsBjorkman so would you avoid fermented foods since they are canned?
Chinese say no yogurt
Can salt or sugar or honey be added to sweet potatoes?
When to feed them a food
Thank you for posting this!
Incredibly helpful!!
So the first foods doesn’t have to be a puree?
What is your opinion about giving babies iron-fortified cereals? My nurse said to start with them, but they are full of preservatives. Can I make them at home?
What age do you recommend to give solids?
So things like tomato, banana, egg, well cooked veg… it's ok to start giving them all that so young? What if a little piece breaks off and they can really chew? FTM here
Erm………first food avocado – "pro tip- roll it in breadcrumbs," now if baby reacts – was it difficulty with the avocado or wheat???!!!! First foods should be single ingredients so you know what's happening if you get a bad reaction – you might say but avocado is not a common allergen but item number 2 was banana and my LO has a banana allergy which was identified super early because we introduced it as a single ingredient on day 3 and repeated on day 7
I’m allergic to Avocado, and so is my mom so im afraid to give it to my daughter, and my sister and father are allergic to bananas…
Thank you soooo much this gives me confidence to try my baby boy on foods ! I have two sons with a 10 year age gap, so this gives me good tips
Amazing 🎉❤❤❤❤
My baby is 3 months this sleep 8 30 😭
Thank you for this video. It's very helpful to send my friend who is a new mama.
Ps please make sure your babies are fully clothed ie pants and shirts for their online safety. The creeps out there like pictures of not fully clothed babies. Protect their online foot print..
I saw my mom cut an apple in half and use a spoon to scrape the surface to feed my little sister. I did the same thing with my baby. it’s a great bonding experience for me and baby and it’s literally just apple sauce straight from an apple. no unnecessary additives with store bough apple sauce
First foods for baby should be animal food, not these fruits that have a lot of sugar and plant foods that are hard for their immature digestive system👎
